I have the honour to confirm my telegram of the
P73 20th of May which decoded was as follows:-
"Three additional nursing sisters required as
"soon as possible. Two for private nursing staff one for Civil
"Hospital staff. Despatch follows by mail",
I enclose papers of particulars of these posts.
Following the usual practice the two sisters at present doing
private duty will join the hospital staff, and be replaced by
the sisters now asked for.

My reasons for requesting your sanction for this
considerable addition to the nursing staff are as follows:-
In July last year the Principal Civil Medical
Officer recommended an increase of the European female Nursing
Staff on the ground that there was no margin in the existing
establishment for vacancies through sickness or leave of absence
and that an extension to the maternity ward and the addition of
a private ward at the Government Civil Hospital had not been
followed by an increase of staff.
I considered that the case might be met by the
appointment of two additional Probationers who were accordingly
provided for in the Estimates for the current year.
It has not, however, been found possible to
obtain the services of suitable probationers, as I had hoped,
and I therefore consider it necessary to increase the number of
